When it comes to helping children with their school work, it is usually maths that young ones would like their parents to support them with. Maths is a difficult subject to pick up but isn’t impossible to strengthen. The key is to start at a young age and work up the ladder slowly. Children can be put down and triggered by low results in school which can lead to an underperforming student. The good news is the ability for doing well in maths can be improved through parental involvement. Here are some top tips for helping your child with maths.

Be aware of what your child is learning and what they are struggling with. If children don’t have a solid foundation with their learning in maths, it can lead to lack of confidence and falling behind. Basic maths skills need to be solidified in order for students to work their way up the ladder successfully. Speak to your child regularly about what they are doing in school and keep up with the curriculum.

Practice maths with them at home. For the best outcome, practice extra maths activities with your child alongside their homework. Target the areas your child needs extra support. Teachers can only do so much whilst teaching a class of 30 so this will be highly beneficial for your child in order for them to progress. Look at their strengths and weaknesses and work with those. Don’t forget to praise their efforts as well. Small everyday tasks such as cooking and playing games can be ways to incorporate maths in a fun way.

Develop a better mindset. Mindset plays a huge role when it comes to how well someone completes something. If you believe you can’t do it, you quite literally will find you have set yourself up for failure. Sadly, students also easily fall into this trap of self-pity and find themselves underperforming and lacking motivation. Ensure that your child is being motivated and praised for their efforts no matter the result. Help them build their confidence and watch them thrive in their work.
