Is an Online K-12 School Right for Your Child?
Many families now have options for their child’s school. You no longer have to send your child to the schools of the town or neighborhood in which you reside. One choice that many families are considering as an option for their child’s education is to enroll in an online school. Is an online school the right choice for your child?
Let’s explore some thoughts connected to choosing a school for your child.
Fostering Specialized Abilities
One consideration used by many families when discussing online schools as an alternative is the desire to foster their child’s abilities. If your child shows passion and potential in the world of entertainment or athletes, an online school might be a better fit than your neighborhood school.
For example, musically inclined students or student athletes, who spend hours training and then travel to perform or compete, need a more flexible schedule for classes. Attending an online schedule provides them the ability to complete their school work on their own schedule.
Also, students, who know the area of the education that they want to focus on, have more choices with online learning. If your child wants to be a chef, they would be able to follow their passion by attending an online school. They could select more courses focused on culinary arts by attending remotely than at the generalized local school.
Medical Concerns
Children who have medical concerns can be much more comfortable attending school from their home. Instead of being in and out of traditional school and chronically absent, an online school can provide a better option. Stress can be reduced for your child when they realize that they can view a class when they feel well. Then your child does not have to worry about not being successful in school.
Family Situations
You certainly know your family situation best. Online schooling can be an excellent option for families who share the raising of their children, but the parents do not live near each other. Instead of your child having to alternate schools when they live with one parent or the other, your child can attend an online school.
Children in families who move frequently for their work can also benefit from an online education. As the family moves, now the school and classmates can remain constant. Your child can make new friends by joining clubs, sports, and/or theater groups for children as you move.
Methods of Learning
All children do not learn in the same manner. Traditional brick-and-mortar schools often have students moving along at the same pace, even if all students are not ready. Many times, teachers in online schools can teach to a smaller breakout group. Others in the class are working in their own homes; therefore, these students are not a distraction to the smaller intensive learning group.
The instructor records many of their online classes or presentations. That recording is available for students to review later. This can be a great benefit for students who do not learn at the same pace as others.
